HANS Device
The Head and Neck Support device, or the HANS device- as it is popularly called- is a safety equipment compulsorily installed in racing sports cars. It minimizes the chances of head and neck injuries in the event of a crash. This U-shaped device is attached only to the helmet and not to the belts, driver’s body, or seat. Attachment is done with the help of two anchors on either side, much like the Hutchens device but placed slightly back. The window nets are meant for protecting the driver of a racing car whenever the speedy cars roll over during a racing event. They also prevent objects from entering the driver compartment. Future cars could be fuelled by hydrogen technology
A team at CSIRO Manufacturing and Infrastructure Technology has developed a small device that can extract enough hydrogen per day from water to power a family car for up to150kms. This work is an important part of CSIRO’s Energy Transformed Flagship research program into positioning Australia for a future hydrogen economy.
Currently, the hydrogen unit runs on main’s power, but researchers are investigating how to power the unit with renewable energy, such as solar and wind power.
Current Driverless Car Technology
One of the main impetuses behind the call for driverless cars is safety. Because driver inattention and driver error cause so many accidents each year, it's natural for carmakers to focus their efforts on systems that can make cars safe, even if drivers aren't. There's a continuum of these "driverless" systems -- some don't seem driverless at all, and others are on par with science fiction cars.
One of the driverless systems that you may not have realized was driverless is anti-lock brakes. Sounds surprising, doesn't it? After all, anti-lock brakes need the driver in order to work. Still, they represent one end of the driverless continuum because anti-lock brakes perform a function that drivers used to have to do themselves. When a car is braking hard and doesn't have anti-lock brakes, the wheels can lock up, sending the car into an out-of-control skid. In a car without anti-lock brakes, the driver has to pump the brake pedal to keep the wheels from locking up. With anti-lock brakes, the system does the pumping for the driver -- and does it better than the driver. The system can read the wheels and knows when they are about to lock and react faster and with a more appropriate response than a driver could. Anti-lock brakes are one of the first technologies that take cars in a driverless direction.
Future car technologies
Automobile propulsion technology under development include gasoline/electric and plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, biofuels, and various alternative fuels.
Research into future alternative forms of power include the development of fuel cells, Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), stirling engines[38], and even using the stored energy of compressed air or liquid nitrogen.
New materials which may replace steel car bodies include duraluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and carbon nanotubes.
Telematics technology is allowing more and more people to share cars, on a pay-as-you-go basis, through such schemes as City Car Club in the UK, Mobility in mainland Europe, and Zipcar in the US.
